What is the ruling on memorizing and studying three verses daily from the Noble Quran instead of reciting extensively without comprehension, and which is better?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Memorizing the Quran is among the greatest acts of worship. Memorizing three verses with understanding is better than memorizing many without understanding, because the greatest objective is contemplation (tadabbur), and contemplation is not achieved except through understanding and knowing the meanings and exegesis (tafsir). If it is difficult for the memorizer to follow the exegesis and understanding, then let him strive in memorization and then return to understanding. It is necessary to combine memorization with exegesis, understanding, and diligence in acting upon the Quran. Indeed, the Companions (Sahaba) would not move beyond ten verses until they knew their meanings and acted upon them, because the recitation of the Quran by the predecessors (Salaf) was a means for understanding, contemplation, jurisprudence, and acting upon it.
