In light of the current global circumstances, how can a person be sure that they are on the truth, truly a believer, truly a Muslim, and of good character? And are simple actions like removing harm from the road or feeding a cat considered good character or faith? And will the doer be rewarded for them even if they did them out of imitation?

To know whether you are upon the truth or not, learn the truth, accompany its people, act upon it, embody noble character, and present yourself to the Qur'an and Sunnah (definition). Do you embody the praiseworthy characteristics mentioned therein, and do you abandon what has been condemned? Do you fulfill what Allah has enjoined upon you and abandon what He has forbidden you from?

Al-Ahnaf ibn Qays used to present himself to the verses of the Qur'an. He passed by verses describing the people of good and realized he was not among them. Then, he passed by verses describing the people of evil and disassociated himself from them. Then he found himself in the words of Allah Almighty: "And others have confessed their sins; they have mixed a righteous deed with another that was bad. Perhaps Allah will turn to them in forgiveness. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful."

Removing harm from the road is a branch of faith, and feeding animals is an act of worship for which a Muslim is rewarded; "There is a reward for every living liver." And whoever performs an action for the sake of Allah, it does not harm him to be imitating another; rather, the imitated one may be rewarded for his action.
