Imam Ibn Taymiyyah recommends the fear of Allah (taqwa) as the best counsel, citing a Quranic verse and the Prophet's advice to Mu'adh ibn Jabal: "Fear Allah wherever you may be, and follow up a bad deed with a good one, it will efface it, and deal with people with good manners."

This counsel is comprehensive because it includes the right of Allah and the rights of people. His saying: "Fear Allah wherever you may be" includes fearing Allah in private and in public. His saying: "and follow up a bad deed with a good one, it will efface it" explains how sins are effaced through repentance, seeking forgiveness, expiating good deeds, and calamities. As for his saying: "and deal with people with good manners," it includes the rights of people, such as maintaining ties with those who cut them off from you, forgiving those who wronged you, and other good manners.

Goodness and its origin stem from the servant's sincerity to his Lord in worship and seeking His help, by cutting off the heart's attachment to creatures and dedicating one's ambition to Allah Almighty.
