What is the dividing line between reliance on God (tawakkul) and taking the necessary means (asbab), taking as an example reliance on God in subjecting spouses and children, and taking the means for good companionship and affection?

Trust in God (Tawakkul) is more comprehensive than [merely taking] means. Its true essence is: to employ the means while the heart relies solely on the Causer [of all things], believing that the means are entirely in His hand alone. These two are inseparable; one cannot be detached from the other. Whoever believes that Tawakkul dispenses with means is misguided. The heart's inclination towards means is one of two states: either shirk (associating partners with God) by relying on them, or tawhid (monotheism) by employing and utilizing them while turning to the Causer. And whoever negates them entirely has flawed both reason and religious law.
