What is the legal ruling on refraining from arguing with a Christian employer who has wronged and insulted, and acting with forbearance and not returning evil for evil, while awaiting the payment of one's salary?
It is prescribed to pardon and forgive those who do wrong, including disbelievers, especially if there is hope for their guidance, based on the Almighty’s saying: "So pardon them and overlook; indeed, Allah loves the doers of good" and "Hold to forgiveness, command what is customary, and turn away from the ignorant." If a Muslim is unable to pardon, he may retaliate in kind, without exceeding limits, such as returning an insult with a similar one, for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "What two disputants say, the sin is upon the initiator unless the wronged one transgresses." Patience and forgiveness are better, for the Almighty says: "And whoever is patient and forgives, indeed, that is of the matters [requiring] determination," and "Allah does not increase a servant by pardoning except in honor." Insulting a Muslim unjustly is forbidden, and the insulted person is not permitted to retaliate except with a similar insult, unless it involves lying, slandering, or insulting ancestors.
