Is it permissible for a son to give his mother from the zakat of his saved gold – which has completed its hawl (one year) – so that she may make up the 200 days she missed in Ramadan, which she is unable to make up or pay expiation for due to her old age and lack of money?

Firstly: Whoever delays making up for missed Ramadan fasts without a valid excuse until the next Ramadan begins, must make them up and feed one poor person for each day. This is a fidyah (expiation) that does not multiply with the repetition of years. As for whether an expiation is required for the delay, there is a difference of opinion among scholars on this matter.

Secondly: It is permissible for a son to give his zakat to his mother for feeding if she is unable to do so, because this falls under the category of settling a debt. A son is not obligated to pay his parents' debts, even if he is responsible for their maintenance. It is permissible to give zakat to parents from the share designated for those working on zakat collection, those in bondage seeking freedom, those in debt, or those fighting in the cause of Allah.
