Who are the Five Weepers?

The "weepers" mentioned by biographers in connection with the Battle of Tabuk were seven, not five. It was regarding them that the verse was revealed: "Nor [is there blame] upon those who, when they came to you for you to provide them with mounts, you said, 'I can find no mounts for you.' They turned away while their eyes overflowed with tears out of grief that they could not find anything to spend [for the expedition]" (Surat At-Tawbah: 92). There is disagreement regarding their names. It has been said that they were the seven sons of Muqarrin from Muzaynah, who were seven brothers, or that they were seven individuals from different tribes. Suffice it to know that the verse was revealed concerning them, and that they had intense love for Allah, His Messenger, and for jihad.
