What is the ruling on buying and selling phone and car numbers, and is the money earned from selling a car license plate number lawful?

Allah Almighty forbade extravagance (israf) and squandering (tabdhir), both of which involve exceeding the limit in spending money. Allah Almighty said: (And eat and drink, but be not excessive. Indeed, He likes not those who commit excess) and (Indeed, spendthrifts are brothers of the devils). On the Day of Judgment, a servant will be questioned about his wealth: how he acquired it and how he spent it. The purchase of distinctive phone numbers and car plates for thousands of dinars and riyals is considered extravagance and squandering, and spending in what is forbidden, especially given the needs of Muslims around the world. Examples of this include buying a car plate with the number 1 for the equivalent of 2.18 million dollars, and a mobile number for the equivalent of 360,000 dollars. The motive for this is arrogance and boasting, even though a distinctive number does not indicate the owner's distinction but rather is a squandering of money, and it resembles wearing garments of fame, which is forbidden. Therefore, it is not permissible to sell and buy these distinctive numbers due to the squandering and extravagance involved. And whoever Allah has bestowed wealth upon should be grateful for His blessing and not spend it on what Allah dislikes, or on what is useless.
