When should one stand upon hearing the call to prayer (Iqama), and is there an Iqama for the Sunnah prayers or the supererogatory (Nawafil) prayers?

Scholars have differed on the timing of the worshiper's standing for prayer when the iqama (call to commence prayer) is given, with several opinions: when the muezzin begins the iqama, or when he says "Hayya 'ala al-Salah" (Hasten to prayer), or after he finishes the iqama, or upon hearing "Qad Qamati al-Salah" (The prayer has commenced) if he sees the Imam. The fourth opinion states: there is no specific time for standing.

The matter in this regard is flexible, but the Sunnah indicates that the worshipers should not stand until they see the Imam if the prayer is being commenced and the Imam has not yet entered the mosque, based on the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "When the prayer is commenced, do not stand until you see me."

The iqama is not prescribed for prayers other than the five obligatory prayers.
