Photography is divided into two types: images without a soul, which are permissible, and images with a soul, which are of two kinds. Sculptural images are forbidden, except for dolls for young girls, and this is a major sin. As for non-sculptural images, they are divided into two types: those drawn by hand, which are forbidden, and those taken by machine (such as video and camera), which are permissible provided they are free from Sharia prohibitions and are regulated by its controls. An image taken by machine is judged according to its purpose: it is forbidden if it is for spreading vice and corruption, obligatory if it is for spreading Islamic da'wah and good, and permissible if it is for permissible matters. It is preferable to be scrupulous and avoid doubtful matters, relying on necessity, need, and legally recognized interests, such as pictures for identity cards and passports.
