Is saffron forbidden for men?

The prohibition of men using saffron is established in the two Sahih collections (Bukhari and Muslim) from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) forbade men from perfuming themselves with saffron. There is a difference of opinion regarding the reason for this prohibition, whether it is due to its smell or its color. Al-Bayhaqi reported from Al-Shafi'i that he forbade a man in a state of ihram from using saffron under any circumstances and commanded him to wash it off. It was also reported by Abu Dawud that angels do not attend the funeral of a person perfumed with saffron. However, Abdullah ibn Umar, Malik, and most of the jurists of Madinah held the view that it is permissible. Therefore, the issue is a matter of scholarly disagreement, and refraining from using saffron for men is closer to precaution and piety.
