Is a saffron-colored garment one that is red? And is it forbidden for men to wear red? What should I do with my old red clothes? And is the Prophet's saying to the Ansar, "Wear trousers and an izar; be different from the People of the Book," an obligation?

Most jurists hold the view that it is permissible to wear a red garment and pray in it without it being disliked (makruh). However, Ibn Qudamah mentioned in "Al-Mughni" that praying in a red garment is disliked for men in thethe Hanbali school of thought. The Malikis deem it disliked for a man if it involves imitating women or seeking fame, otherwise, it is not disliked. Ibn al-Arabi clarifies that Malik, Al-Shafi'i, and Abu Hanifah permitted red, while some Iraqis disliked saffron-colored garments for men. As for the hadith of Ibn Umar, in which he returned a Syrian garment due to the presence of a red thread, the reason was not the color of the thread but his dislike for the silk trim on the garment, as Asma bint Abi Bakr clarified by producing the Prophet's ﷺ cloak, which was hemmed with brocade. As for the command to wear trousers and differ from the People of the Book, it is understood as a recommendation (mustahabb) rather than an obligation (wajib).
