What is your opinion on the difference between the two hadiths reported on the authority of the Prophet’s lifetime (ag)], may Allah’s prayers and peace be upon him, and is it possible to reconcile them?

The well-known opinion, adopted by the majority of scholars, is that the Prophet (peace be upon him) resided in Mecca for forty years before his prophethood, thirteen years after his prophethood, and ten years in Medina. He passed away at the age of sixty-three. This is narrated by Bukhari and Muslim from Ibn Abbas.

As for what Anas ibn Malik narrated in Bukhari and Muslim, stating that he stayed in Mecca for ten years and in Medina for ten years, and passed away at the age of sixty, scholars have different ways to reconcile between the two narrations:

1. Ignoring the fraction: Anas's narration only mentioned the round number (the ten), and did not mention the additional years (the fraction). This was a common practice in Arabic speech. 2. Period of revelation: Those who said "thirteen years" counted from the very beginning of the revelation, while those who said "ten years" counted from after the initial period of revelation and the beginning of the Quran's descent following the angel's appearance.
