What is the ruling on one who intentionally broke her fast for five days in Ramadan due to a physical relationship? Is she required to only make up these days, or fast 300 days, or feed 300 needy people? And is it true that whoever breaks their fast after starting it must fast for two consecutive months or feed 60 needy people, while whoever breaks their fast before starting it is only required to make up the days? And how can a girl fast for two consecutive months with her menstrual period?

If the intended meaning of physical relationship is intercourse during the day in Ramadan (definition), then this is a greater sin and necessitates, along with repentance, a severe expiation (emancipating a slave; if one cannot find a slave, then fasting for two consecutive months; if one cannot do that, then feeding sixty poor people). The expiation is repeated with the repetition of the days of intercourse. However, if the relationship was without intercourse and resulted in the emission of semen, then the fast is invalidated, and only making up the fast is required, along with repentance, without expiation. The continuity of fasting for the two months is not broken by menstruation.
