Is it permissible to play the Quran, such as Surat Ya-Sin, at the grave of the deceased, and does its reward reach the deceased, and what is the ruling on that?
Playing a recording of the Quran at the grave has the same ruling as reciting the Quran at the grave. Jurists have differed regarding the ruling on reciting at the grave, ranging between disliking it (makrooh) and permitting it (ja'iz). The majority opinion, which is the absolute disliking (makrooh) of it, has been favored. The majority based their argument on the weakness of the hadith "Recite Ya-Sin over your dead" due to three defects: the anonymity of Abu 'Uthman, the anonymity of his father, and اضطراب (disruption in the chain or text). It was favored that the intent of the hadith is recitation at the time of death (Sakarat al-Mawt), which has been the practice of people, both ancient and modern, and because the dying person benefits from listening and the presence of heart and mind, whereas the deceased person does not benefit from recitation at their grave after death. Therefore, playing a recording of the Quran at the grave is not from the Sunnah, and the deceased does not benefit from it.
