Is listening to the recitation of the Qur'an obligatory, and does it substitute for the Sunnah of "Tahiyat al-Masjid" (greeting the mosque), and which takes precedence: greeting the mosque or the ongoing lesson?

The majority of scholars hold that listening attentively (insat) to the Quranic recitation is recommended and not obligatory, except in prayer, where the follower (ma'mum) must listen attentively to the imam's recitation. However, some scholars deem attentive listening obligatory in all circumstances. The salutation to the mosque (tahiyyat al-masjid) is not forfeited by listening to the Quranic recitation or by sitting in a gathering of knowledge.
