How can one differentiate between God's gifts as a reward and as a gradual enticement (istidraj)?
If a servant sees that Allah is giving him what he loves from this world while he is committing sins, then this is a gradual enticement (istidraj) from Allah, as mentioned in the noble Hadith and the recitation of the verse: "So when they forgot that by which they had been reminded, We opened to them the doors of every [good] thing until, when they rejoiced in what they had been given, We seized them suddenly, and they were in despair." However, if the servant is obedient to Allah and thankful to Him, then His giving is not a gradual enticement. A person should examine himself, for he is most aware of himself, as Allah Almighty says: "Rather, man, against himself, will be a witness."
