What is the interpretation of the Hadith: "Do not cleanse yourselves with dung or bones, for they are the provisions of your brethren among the jinn"?

It is not permissible to use bones and dung for istinja’ (cleaning oneself after relieving oneself). The prohibition of dung is due to its impurity and because it is fodder for the jinn's animals. The prohibition of bones is because they are food for our Muslim brethren among the jinn. As for the bones of a carcass, they are impure and are the provisions of the disbelieving jinn.
