The answer

The trash in which food and drink scraps and cans are placed, and whatever dust and the like has been swept, is not ruled to be impure, and there is no harm in placing bones in it.

As for the trash in which impurities are placed, such as bathroom trash, it is not appropriate to throw the bones of slaughtered animals (whose meat is permissible to eat) into it, because that would be a defilement of the bones, and it is in the meaning of using them for purification (istinja'). That is forbidden, because they are the food of the Muslim Jinn. Scholars have differed regarding the ruling on performing istinja' with bones, with some saying it is forbidden and others saying it is disliked but not forbidden.
