The question

What are the rulings concerning prayer for a woman whose menstrual cycle has been disturbed due to an IUD, specifically: When should she begin praying after purification, given the possibility of bleeding returning, and must she make up the prayers for the days she missed, thinking her period had started but it did not, or it started two days after she stopped praying?

The answer

When a woman sees menstrual blood, she must refrain from prayer and all other acts forbidden to a menstruating woman. When she experiences purity by one of its two signs (dryness or the white discharge), she must immediately perform ghusl (ritual bath), pray, and fast. All rulings for pure women apply to her, regardless of whether she knows or strongly believes that the bleeding will return or not. The most cautious approach is to hasten to perform ghusl. If the bleeding returns thereafter, she reverts to being a menstruating woman as long as it is within the menstrual period. The period of purity between the two bleedings is a valid period of purity. A woman is not permitted to abandon prayer unless she is certain she has seen menstrual blood; the mere presence of menstrual pains is not sufficient. She must make up the prayers she missed during the time when she was obligated to perform them.
