What is the ruling on melodizing verses while reciting them in books, lectures, and sermons?

The early Muslims (Salaf) and the imams whose footsteps are followed were not known to alter their voices when reciting Quranic verses during sermons or admonitions. Indeed, some contemporary scholars have considered this act an innovation (bid‘ah) due to its divergence from the guidance of the Salaf, and many listeners have not approved of it.
