Does Sahih Muslim include false Israiliyyat narrations, as is understood from the statement of Ibn Baz regarding the Hadith of "the creation of the earth on Saturday"?
This Hadith is one about which scholars have differed regarding its authenticity, and most scrutinizing scholars have deemed it unauthentic.
Ibn Kathir said: "There has been disagreement concerning it as narrated from Ibn Jurayj, and Ali ibn al-Madini, al-Bukhari, and others spoke about it. Al-Bukhari said: 'And some said, from Ka'b, and that is more correct,' meaning that the Hadith is something Abu Hurayrah heard from Ka'b al-Ahbar, and some narrators erred by attributing it as a prophetic tradition (marfu') to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him." And it contains extreme oddity in its text, such as the omission of the creation of the heavens and the mention of the creation of the earth and what is in it in seven days, which contradicts the Qur'an.
Al-Tabari said: "The early generations of scholars were unanimous that the beginning of the creation of the heavens and the earth was on Sunday."
Ibn Taymiyyah said: "This Hadith was impugned by those who were more knowledgeable than Muslim, such as Yahya ibn Ma'in, al-Bukhari, and others. Al-Bukhari mentioned that it is from the words of Ka'b al-Ahbar, and al-Bayhaqi agreed with those who weakened it, and this is the correct view; because it is established by continuous transmission (tawatur) that Allah created the heavens and the earth and what is between them in six days, and that the last of creation was on Friday, so it necessarily follows that the beginning of creation was on Sunday, and this is what is reliably transmitted in other Ahadith and narrations."
Shaykh Sulayman al-Dubaykhi also favored its weakness due to its contradiction with the clear text of the Qur'an. It has been weakened by a group of imams from both its chain of narration (sanad) and its text (matn).
Accordingly, Shaykh Ibn Baz's intention by stating that it is from the Isra'iliyyat (Judeo-Christian traditions) is that it is taken from Ka'b al-Ahbar, and that the narration attributing it to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, is an error and a mistake. The ruling of its invalidity is not merely because it is from the Isra'iliyyat, but rather because it contradicts the Qur'an.
