Ibn Qudamah is Muwaffaq al-Din Abu Muhammad Abdullah ibn Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Maqdisi. He was born in Sha'ban in the year 541 AH in Jama'il. He arrived in Damascus at the age of ten. He studied and memorized Mukhtasar al-Khiraqi, and heard narrations from his father and others. He traveled to Baghdad with his maternal cousin, the Hafiz Abdul-Ghani, in the year 561 AH, and they heard from a number of scholars. He returned to Damascus and began compiling his book "Al-Mughni" on Fiqh, which is an eloquent book in the Hanbali madhhab spanning ten volumes. He was an imam in various fields of knowledge, an ascetic, devout, humble, generous, loving towards the poor, and much given to worship and vigil prayers. He passed away on Saturday, Eid al-Fitr, in the year 620 AH in Damascus, and was buried at the foot of Qasioun.
