What is the ruling on eating beaver?

Scholars have differed regarding the ruling on eating beaver. The preponderant opinion is that it is permissible, and this is the view of the majority, based on the generality of Allah Almighty’s saying: "Lawful to you is the pursuit of game from the sea and its food as a provision for you and for those who travel, and forbidden to you is the pursuit of game from the land as long as you are in the state of ihram. And fear Allah to whom you will be gathered." And the saying of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, concerning the sea: "Its water is pure and its dead are lawful."
