Is it permissible to lie to one's parents or to be absent from work in order to attend religious study circles and draw closer to Allah, especially if the parents forbid attending these gatherings?

If the knowledge you seek to acquire in these study circles is essential and obligatory for you, such as learning the rulings of purification (tahara) and prayer, and other matters which a Muslim cannot afford to be ignorant of, and you cannot obtain it otherwise, then you must go out to attend these lessons. This would be a religious obligation, and your parents' obedience is not due if they forbid you from it.

If you cannot go out without their permission, you may use evasive language (ma'areed) in this matter, such as telling them that you were delayed due to extra work, intending thereby the lesson.

Learning the rulings of the religion takes precedence over work, and you should be keen on it. However, it is not permissible for you to leave work to attend these gatherings except with the permission of your employers.

You should also advise your parents about prayer, reminding them of its importance and the seriousness of abandoning it.
