What is the complete explanation of the Hadith: "Why do you enter upon a people with whom Allah is wroth?" A man called out to him and said, "We are amazed by them, O Messenger of Allah!" He said, "Shall I not tell you of something more amazing than that? A man from among yourselves informs you of what was before you and what will be after you, so be upright and aim for the truth, for Allah cares not a whit about your torment, and there will come a people who will not defend themselves at all"?

The hadith (definition) narrated by Ahmad and others about the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, passing through the valley of Al-Hijr in the land of Thamud, and his saying: "Do not enter upon these tormented people, unless you are weeping. If you are not weeping, then do not enter upon them, lest you be afflicted by what afflicted them," is a clear text prohibiting entry into places of torment except with humility, contemplation, and weeping out of fear of Allah, and a warning against heedlessness in reflecting upon the signs. As for his saying: "Shall I not inform you of something more wondrous than that? A man from among yourselves will inform you of what was before you and what will be after you," the man is the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. As for "So be upright and strive for perfection, for Allah does not care about your torment in the least," it is an invitation to be steadfast upon the straight path and to strive for approximation in that, because Allah does not care about the torment of those who are not upright. And the phrase "And there will come people who will not defend themselves at all" may mean that peoples will come who will disobey the Prophet's command regarding entering upon the tormented ones without weeping.
