Backbiting is forbidden in Islamic law. It is to mention your brother with something he dislikes, whether it pertains to his body, religion, worldly affairs, self, physical appearance, character, wealth, child, parent, spouse, servant, slave, turban, garment, gait, movement, cheerfulness, looseness, frown, openness, or anything else related to him.

Whoever is backbitten by people for something that is not a defect according to Islamic law should be patient, for he will gain reward, good deeds, and expiation for his sins. If they backbite him for something that is a defect according to Islamic law, such as sins, he should repent to Allah, especially if he is openly committing the sin. It is feared that he might fall under the hadith: "The people of Paradise are those whose ears are filled with the praise of people for good, and he hears it; and the people of Hell are those whose ears are filled with the praise of people for evil, and he hears it," and the hadith: "Whoever you praise with good, Paradise becomes obligatory for him, and whoever you speak ill of, Hell becomes obligatory for him. You are the witnesses of Allah on Earth," and the hadith: "Indeed, Allah has angels who speak through the tongues of the children of Adam concerning what is in a person, be it good or evil." This is not considered backbiting, as it is permissible to mention a wicked person who openly commits wickedness.
