What is the meaning of the Hadith "Indeed, we have been forbidden to follow our gazes [with our eyes]," and is it authentic, and does it refer to shooting stars?

This Hadith is authentic. Its chain of narration was authenticated by Ibn Muflih and Al-Arna'ut. Ibn Muflih interpreted the prohibition as being one of karahah (disliked). The meaning of "inqada" is: it fell. The story is that Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) forbade those with him from following the falling star with their eyes, saying: "We were prohibited from following it with our eyes." The scholars have mentioned that when a Companion says, "I was commanded," or "I was prohibited," it is attributed to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).
