What should a person do if a dog's saliva gets on their clothes or body, and is it obligatory to wash the spot seven times?

Scholars differed concerning the impurity of dogs. The Shafi'is and Hanbalis held that the dog is impure in its essence (najis al-'ayn), while the Hanafis maintained that the dog's impurity lies in its saliva and moisture, not in its essence. The Malikis, on the other hand, considered the dog to be pure in its essence. The majority of jurists believe that if a dog licks a vessel, it renders the vessel impure.

As for the preponderant opinion, it is the impurity of all parts of the dog, including its saliva and hair. They cited the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "The purification of the vessel of one of you, when a dog licks in it, is to wash it seven times, the first of them with earth." Therefore, if a dog inserts its tongue or any part of its body into water, the water becomes impure, necessitating its disposal and the washing of the vessel. If the impure water touches clothes or the body, the affected area must be washed seven times, one of them with earth or what serves its purpose, such as soap, to remove the impurity.
