What is the ruling on a woman speaking with a clothing store owner or a tailor?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

It is permissible for a woman to speak with the shopkeeper as needed, without temptation. Women used to speak with men for needs that did not involve temptation. However, if the conversation is accompanied by laughter or an alluring voice, then it is forbidden, due to Allah Almighty's saying: (Then do not be soft in speech [to men], lest he in whose heart is disease should covet, but speak with appropriate speech) Al-Ahzab/32. The Muslim woman must fear Allah and avoid anything that incites temptation, and she must be modest and cover herself when interacting with men.
