Is it permissible for a son to marry a woman his father divorced before consummating the marriage with her?

It is not permissible for a son to marry his father's divorced wife, even if the divorce occurred before consummation, nor for a father to marry his son's divorced wife, even if the divorce occurred before consummation. This is due to the generality of Allah's saying: (And do not marry those [women] whom your fathers married) and His saying: (and the wives of your sons who are from your [own] loins). The marriage contract alone makes the wife forbidden to the husband's sons and to the husband's fathers.
