Why might sinful and unfilial people be granted success in this world, while the affairs of the righteous may be made difficult despite their prayers and commitment? And when will everyone be given their due? Will the oppressor be punished in this world and the Hereafter? And is it permissible to pray for the punishment of such people?

One should turn to Allah with abundant supplication during distress. For Allah, the Exalted, gives and withholds with wisdom. He may grant worldly possessions to the disbeliever as a means of gradual enticement (istidraj), and may deprive the believer for a wisdom, to elevate ranks and expiate sins. Allah answers the prayer of the distressed, even if the person is a disbeliever. He may, however, delay the answer to a Muslim's supplication or replace it with something better. As for punishment, it is all according to His wisdom, the Exalted. Allah may hold one accountable for their sin in this world, or reserve it for the Hereafter, or pardon it. It is permissible to supplicate against the oppressor within certain limits, but forgiveness is better.
