What is the ruling of Islam regarding those who perform strange acts, such as those that occur during Mawlids, and are these miracles (karamat) or sorcery? And do the extraordinary feats performed by Awliya (saints) have a basis in the Quran and Sunnah? What is the ruling on seeking intercession (tawassul) through Awliya and the righteous?

The actions mentioned are among those of sorcerers or devils intended to corrupt beliefs, and some call them eye magic. As for uttering "huwa huwa," it is an innovation (bid'ah). And whoever claims that "La ilaha illa Allah" (there is no god but Allah) is the dhikr (remembrance) of the common people, and that the dhikr of the elite is the singular name (ism mufrad), and the dhikr of the elite of the elite is the concealed name (ism mudhmar), then he is misguided and mistaken. Miraculous feats are not proof of faith, as they can appear at the hands of the allies of the Most Merciful and the devil. If they appear at the hand of a person who is not steadfast in obedience and the Sunnah, then it is a delusion (istidraj) and not a miracle (karamah). Seeking help from saints is a polytheistic form of seeking aid (istighathah shirkiyyah), and seeking intercession through them (tawassul bihim) is a matter of scholarly disagreement, with the preponderant view being its prohibition.
