What is the ruling on infant boys wearing gold?

Scholars differed regarding the ruling on adorning a boy with gold. The majority of scholars (Hanafi, Maliki, and Hanbali schools) held it to be forbidden, citing that we are commanded to protect children from prohibited things, and that the general evidence prohibiting gold for males includes young boys. Conversely, the Shafi'is permitted it for a boy as long as he has not reached puberty, reasoning that a boy does not possess the valor for which gold was prohibited for men. The preponderant view is that of the majority due to the strength of their evidence.
