Is working with a company owner to pay off their credit card bills – which caused interest to accrue – considered participation in usury?
It is forbidden to deal with usury, whether lending or borrowing. It is also forbidden to deal with usurious credit cards. It is not permissible to deposit money in a usurious bank unless there is a necessity to preserve the money when no Islamic bank is available, and in that case, it should be limited to depositing in a current account. If a person has repented from dealing with usury, there is no harm in following up on his account and settling his bills to help him get rid of the consequences of the forbidden act. However, if he persists in dealing with usury, it is not permissible to follow up on his usurious account, as this implies condoning usury and assisting in it.
