Why does Algeria follow the Maliki school of thought to the exclusion of other schools of thought?

The Maliki madhhab (school of thought) was prevalent in Andalusia and the Maghreb for centuries, having been propagated there by Yahya ibn Yahya al-Laythi, a student of Imam Malik, who narrated Al-Muwatta from him. Leadership in issuing fatwas in his country culminated with him, and through him, the Maliki madhhab spread in that region. The Maliki madhhab predominated in Hijaz, Basra, Egypt, and the neighboring lands of Africa, Andalusia, Sicily, and the Maghreb, reaching the lands of the Muslim Sudanese. It is therefore no surprise that it spread in Algeria and that people there follow it to the exclusion of other madhhabs.
