Is it permissible to fast to expiate for intercourse during the daytime in Ramadan (two consecutive months) intermittently rather than consecutively?
It is not permissible to separate the days of fasting during the two consecutive months for the expiation of a man who has had intercourse with his wife during Ramadan, except for a valid excuse such as illness. The proof for this is the Almighty's saying: "And those who declare zihar (unlawful) their wives and then recant that which they said - then [there must be] the freeing of a slave before they touch one another. This is instructed to you; and Allah is Acquainted with what you do. And he who does not find [a slave] - then a fast for two consecutive months before they touch one another; and he who is unable to do so - then the feeding of sixty poor persons. That is for you to believe in Allah and His Messenger. And those are the limits of Allah. And for the disbelievers is a painful punishment." (Al-Mujadila: 3-4).
