Is the fasting for the expiation of intercourse during the daytime in Ramadan—two consecutive months—required to be continuous? And does one continue fasting after Ramadan, or does one start anew? And is it necessary to feed sixty poor people all at once?

Whoever has intercourse during the daytime in Ramadan has sinned and is liable for expiation (kaffarah), which is the freeing of a slave. If unable to do so, then fasting for two consecutive months. If still unable, then feeding sixty poor people. It is not permissible for him to feed if he is capable of fasting.

If he starts fasting and then Ramadan overtakes him, he should fast Ramadan, break his fast on Eid day, and then complete the two months of fasting. He does not need to restart his fast from the beginning, because fasting Ramadan does not interrupt the continuity.

It is not obligatory to feed the sixty poor people at one time; rather, it is permissible to feed them in separate groups until the number is complete.
