What is incumbent upon a man who has intercourse with his wife on two separate days during the daylight hours of Ramadan? Is he obligated to fast for four consecutive months, or to feed 120 needy persons? Is embarrassment from continuous fasting considered a valid excuse to switch to feeding? And how is feeding 60 needy persons carried out, or its value paid to a specific entity?

Deliberate sexual intercourse during the daytime in Ramadan is a grave sin, and the major expiation (kaffarah kubra) is due for each day on which intercourse was deliberately engaged in. The expiation is: freeing a slave. If that is not possible, then fasting for two consecutive months. If that is not possible, then feeding sixty needy persons. Embarrassment is not considered an excuse to transition to feeding instead of fasting. If you are temporarily unable to fast, you must wait until you are able to fast, and feeding is not sufficient in this case. However, if you are certain that you will not find an opportunity to fast, then feeding sixty needy persons will suffice.
