Is it true that the Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, did not call the Adhan because he entrusted it to others, or because he was busy conveying the message, or so that it would not be thought that there was another prophet besides him, or because if he had called the Adhan, whoever failed to respond would have been an infidel, or because he was a caller and thus could not bear witness for himself?

This statement is taken from a fatwa by Sheikh Atiyyah Saqr, and it is an attempt to seek wisdom in the Prophet's (peace be upon him) not calling the adhan. We mentioned in a previous fatwa that many of these justifications are debatable, and the best answer for his not calling the adhan is his engagement with the affairs of the Muslims, which made it difficult to observe the times. So, he left what was virtuous for what was more virtuous. Sheikh Ibn Uthaymeen said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and his Rightly Guided Caliphs did not call the adhan because they were preoccupied with the more important matters over the important ones. This is because the Imam is concerned with all people, and if he were to dedicate himself to observing the time, he would be distracted from the important affairs of the Muslims, especially in earlier times when there were no clocks or easy guides."
