Will a person be punished in the grave or the afterlife for a doubt that prevents a Hadd punishment?

If the doubt arises from an error – such as someone who has intercourse with a foreign woman, believing her to be his wife – then no sin or punishment results from it, for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Indeed, Allah has pardoned for my Ummah [nation] their mistakes, their forgetfulness, and what they are forced to do." However, if the doubt does not arise from an error – such as someone who commits adultery or theft intentionally and deliberately, acknowledges it, then retracts his confession before the punishment is carried out – then his retraction is considered a doubt that nullifies the hadd punishment for him, even if the sin is present when considering the reality of the matter. And despite the establishment of his sin, it cannot be definitively stated that he will be punished for it in the grave or the Hereafter, for knowledge of that is with Allah. The disobedient monotheist is under Allah's will, and sins have expiations that erase them.
