Prayer is not obligatory for a child until they reach puberty (wet dream), but parents must command their children to pray when they reach the age of seven to train them for it. They should be disciplined for abandoning it at the age of ten. Scholars have differed on the ruling concerning parents commanding their children to pray. The majority (Hanafis, Shafi'is, and Hanbalis) hold that it is obligatory for parents to do so, while the Malikis consider it recommended. As for taking children to the mosque, those who have reached the age of seven should be taken to train them in congregational prayer.
