What is your advice for me as a student on a scholarship to America, as I have been accepted into a university that requires me to live in its dorms with a roommate who may not be Muslim, and this might cause me difficulty in prayer or religious slackening, especially since I have prayed Salat al-Istikharah?

Merely living with a non-Muslim student in the same room is not forbidden, but it becomes forbidden if it leads to a religious transgression or neglect of religious rituals. In such a case, abandoning it becomes obligatory. This also applies to traveling to non-Muslim countries, as it is only permissible for those who can uphold their religious rituals and are safe from temptation. A Muslim should not feel embarrassed about performing their prayers in front of a non-believer; rather, they should be proud of it, so that it may be a cause for the guidance of others.
