What is the Shar'i ruling on the marriage of a young man and a young woman—whose relationship has lasted for 9 years—given the refusal of both their guardians, and is it permissible for them to marry by order of the judge?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

The young man and woman must repent to Allah for their prohibited emotional relationship. If the guardian of the girl refuses to marry her to this competent young man without a legitimate reason, then the girl has the right to refer the matter to the judiciary for the judge to marry her. However, if the young man's father refuses his marriage to the girl, an attempt should be made to convince him to agree. Otherwise, his obedience takes precedence, unless the young man fears temptation for himself.
