The answer

The preponderant view is that it is obligatory for men to perform the prescribed prayers in congregation. The imam's shortcomings in this regard do not permit abstaining from the Friday prayer that he leads. He must be advised and shown that he is an example for the people, and it is not befitting for him to neglect obligations or Sunnahs. If he does not respond, efforts should be made to remove him and appoint another imam who is more diligent in his duties. If his removal is not possible or would lead to a greater harm, then one must pray behind him. And whoever is able to pray in another mosque whose imam is more pious, then let him do so.
