What do the Quran and Sunnah say about the Ark of the Covenant?

The Quran mentions the Ark (at-Tabut) in the story of Talut (Saul), but only states concerning it that it contained 'sakinah' (tranquility) and 'a remnant of what the family of Moses and the family of Aaron had left,' that angels carried it, and that it was a sign of Talut's kingship. Commentators have differed on the meaning of 'sakinah,' the details of 'what was left by the family of Moses and Aaron,' and the location and manner of the angels bringing the Ark. The noble Prophetic Sunnah (definition) does not mention the Ark, and what has been narrated from the Companions was mostly received from the People of the Book. In conclusion, we suffice with what the Holy Quran has mentioned about the Ark, and Muslims should not delve into details that the Prophet (peace be upon him) did not clarify, because preoccupation with such details may lead to believing falsehoods or disbelieving the truth. Allah Almighty has indeed enriched Muslims, rendering them independent of the books and stories of the People of the Book, by what He revealed in the Holy Quran and what He inspired to His Prophet (peace be upon him).
