Is the interpretation of "فِي شُغُلٍ فَاكِهُونَ" (in an occupation, amused/enjoying) as deflowering virgins an ijtihad (independent reasoning) that may be erroneous, or a fixed religious truth? And can this interpretation, which transforms sex from a need into an ultimate goal, be correct despite the aversion of a sound soul to it?

The interpretation of the verse is disputed. The aforementioned interpretation was transmitted by Al-Tabari, Al-Qurtubi, and Ibn Al-Qayyim from Ibn Abbas and Ibn Mas'ud. Dr. Hikmat Bashir's statement seems to imply that this transmission from them is not authentic. Jannah (Paradise) is a abode of recompense and enjoyment, and there is nothing strange in its inhabitants engaging in their pleasures and delights. Explicit texts have been narrated stating that they will have spouses whom they will enjoy, along with all kinds of everlasting bliss. Allah Almighty says: "And therein is whatever the souls desire and [what] delights the eyes, and you will abide therein eternally."
