The Shafi'is are of the opinion that it is desirable for a person to perform the ' for themselves if the guardian did not do so, in order to make up for what was missed. This is supported by what Al-Tabarani narrated from Anas, that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, performed 'Aqiqah for himself after he was commissioned as a prophet, and Al-Albani authenticated it. It is recommended by the majority of jurists to cook the entire 'Aqiqah, but it is permissible to distribute it without cooking.
