According to the Hanafis, masturbation is reprehensibly forbidden (makrooh tahreeman) if it is for the purpose of arousing lust, and the one who performs it is sinful. However, if it is to calm excessive lust, it is hoped that there will be no blame upon him. They cited the Almighty's saying: {And those who guard their private parts, except from their wives or those their right hands possess, for indeed, they are not to be blamed. But whoever seeks beyond that, then those are the transgressors.}

As for those who permitted it—without necessity—their evidence is that no proof for its prohibition has been established, so it remains upon its original principle, which is permissibility.

However, the act of masturbating with another person is forbidden, and it is more prohibited than performing it with one's wife; it is considered a type of sodomy.
