What is the religious ruling on a devout husband who beats his wife, tortures her, deprives her of her family, and claims that Islam permits him to do so? And does Islamic Law grant the husband the right to such violence?

The absence of affection and kindness between spouses turns life into hell. Beating the wife and treating her harshly is an injustice and contrary to good companionship. Beating is not permissible except in the case of nushuz (rebellious disobedience) and with specific legal guidelines. The husband must fear Allah and cease such behavior. We advise the wife to be patient and try to persuade her husband, or to seek help from wise individuals. If this does not work, she may refer her case to a judge. As for preventing visits to parents, this should not be done, but obedience to the husband takes precedence. Communication with family can be maintained through phone calls or messages.
